It Started With a Very Bright Idea…
In 1969, Caltech Ph.D. and hobby shooter Dr. John Matthews started the Newport Corporation to design laser applications for industry. Over the next decade, he found a way to combine these two passions, and he spun off a new company with a new mission: he created a laser sight that was eventually adopted by the Los Angeles Police Department’s SWAT Team for security during the1984 Olympics. This led to a novel idea that’s standard equipment today—weapon-mounted lights.

 

Matthew’s company, Laser Products, eventually changed its name to that of its popular product, the Surefire Weaponlight. It went on to establish itself as a leader in powerful, compact illumination tools for tactical applications, from weapon-mounted lights and sights to hand-held lights bright enough to temporarily blind, unbalance, and disorient an assailant.. SureFire, LLC is headquartered in Fountain Valley, California.
