Under Armour was founded in 1996 by former University of Maryland football player Kevin Plank. Inspired by the sweaty misery he and his teammates suffered wearing cotton shirts under their jerseys and equipment, his idea was to create a lightweight compression T-shirt that could wick perspiration away from the skin. After graduation, he took his business degree and some sample shirts on the road, selling the first batch to the Georgia Tech football team.
